“How Multiple Schlerosis and Dysimmune Neuropathy have changed my life”

La storia di Carmelo Schifignano, in arte Karmin Shiff, porta con sè un ingente carico di speranza e solidarietà, seppur macchiate dal dolore della malattia.

This is the story of Carmelo Schifignano, art name Karmin Shiff, who carries with him a significant amount of hope and solidarity, despite being profoundly marked by the pain and stigma of his illness.

Poi, la battuta d’arresto. Lo scorso aprile gli diagnosticano la Sclerosi Multipla e la Neuropatia Disimmune. Fama, soldi, viaggi e lusso diventano piccole mosche in confronto alla consapevolezza di non potere più guarire poiché la scienza medica, finora, può solo stabilizzare queste patologie.

Then the shocking setback: last April they diagnosed him with Multiple Schlerosis and dysimmune neuropathy. Fame, money, travel and luxury are all suddenly insignificant when faced with the knowledge of not getting better because so far medical science knows no cure.

«Ho accusato inizialmente – afferma Shiff – dolori agli arti inferiori e vista annebbiata. Quando i medici hanno diagnosticato la malattia «Ho chiesto – prosegue Karmin – di indirizzarmi alle migliori cure perché convinto che potessi ottenerle. Compresi solo dopo che queste sono concesse a tutti, ciò che manca ancora è la soluzione al problema: la Sclerosi non si può curare».

“Initially I suffered with pain in my lower joints and blurry vision. When I was first diagnosed, I asked the doctors to direct me towards the best possible care, convinced that there would be a cure. Only later did I realise that whilst the care is available to all the main problem is that there still is no cure available…multiple schlerosis cannot be cured”. 

Da qui, Karmin si rifugia nuovamente nella musica, che è da sempre la sua passione, e magari presto realizzerà anche un brano musicale, pensando a donare all’Aism, l’associazione italiana Sclerosi multipla, l’intero ricavato dalle vendite per sostenere la ricerca. «Non cerco notorietà – afferma Karmin – bensì vorrei aiutare i medici e fare breccia nei cuori di quanti leggeranno la mia storia.

From here Karmin finds solace and comfort in his music, which has always been his passion, and perhaps soon he will produce another track of his own, with the idea of donating all funds towards the Italian association for multilple schlerosis, in order to support their continued research into a cure. “I am not looking for fame, states Karmin, I would just like to help the doctors in their quest to find a cure, and conquer the hearts of those who will read my story”.

A questi dico di farsi forza e trovare il coraggio per affrontare perdite di denaro e lavoro a causa degli effetti del Covid, negativi anche per l’economia. Tutto può essere affrontato e superato, se c’è la salute». È tempo di cambiare spartito, magari apprezzando le piccole cose.

“My message is to face any loss of earnings or jobs owing to the impact of Covid with courage and strength, which have been negative even for the economy. However, everything can be dealt with and overcome if there is good health which you simply can’t put a price on. It is time to change the script, perhaps focussing and appreciating the little things in life”.
